The supreme creator created Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva to develop the universe. Brahma created the universe. Vishnu assumed the role of protector while Shiva turned into destroyer. Brahma created Manu and Shatrupa to start life in the universe. However their progeny, the Devas and the Rakshasas, were involved in intense rivalry and enmity. Sage Brihaspati and Sage Shukracharya, the principal teacher of Devas and Rakshasas respectively, brokered peace and they decided to opt for churning the ocean for Samundra Manthan. The churning produced Amrit and several other precious objects. The last object to emerge was the Kalkuta poison which threatened to destroy the entire universe. Shiva drank this poison and stored it in his neck. His neck turned blue and hence he was acknowledged as Neelkanth Shiva.
