About Author :
Baroness Emma Orczy [1865-1947] was born in Hungary. In 1880, the Orczy family moved to London. Emma attended Heatherleys School of Fine Art. There, she met Montague MacLean Barstow, a young illustrator. They married in 1894. She worked with her husband as a translator and an illustrator. In 1899, she started writing soon after the birth of her son. In 1903, she and her husband wrote a play whose protagonist, Sir Percy Blakeney—The Scarlet Pimpernel rescued French aristocrats from the French revolution. She published a novelization of the story. The play ran four years. Its success spurred enormous sales of the novel. She wrote more than a dozen other Pimpernel books of which the first, I Will Repay (1906), was the most popular. The last Pimpernel book was Mamzelle Guillotine (1940). She eventually purchased an estate in Monte Carlo from her books successes.
Reviews :
The Scarlet Pimpernel is a classic novel, though it is hard to categorize. It is part romance, part adventure, part spy thriller, and part superhero fiction. All of these elements went into the pot and the resulting stew is extremely entertaining. -- Joseph Boone
Constant danger, wit, romance, and adventure befall the reader at every turn. -- A. Van Hecke
