Mr Verloc, the secret agent, keeps a shop in Londons Soho where he lives with his wife Winnie, her infirm mother, and her idiot brother, Stevie. When Verloc is reluctantly involved in an anarchist plot to blow up the Greenwich Observatory things go disastrously wrong, and what appears to be a simple tale proves to involve politicians, policemen, foreign diplomats and Londons fashionable society in the darkest and most surprising interrelations.

About Conrad:
Joseph Conrad (born Teodor Józef Konrad Korzeniowski, 3 December 1857 - 3 August 1924) was a Polish-born novelist. Some of his works have been labelled romantic: Conrads supposed "romanticism" is heavily imbued with irony and a fine sense of mans capacity for self-deception. Many critics regard Conrad as an important forerunner of Modernist literature. Conrads narrative style and anti-heroic characters have influenced many writers, including Ernest Hemingway, D.H. Lawrence, Graham Greene, Joseph Heller and Jerzy Kosiński, as well as inspiring such films as Apocalypse Now (which was drawn from Conrads Heart of Darkness).
